The Cununa Trio is the core of The Cununa Ensemble. Three Romanian musicians who share a passion for folk music from Romania and other Balkan countries. In this program titled SANZIENE, the Cununa Trio celebrates the magic surrounding the Midsummer Night festival in Romanian folk culture.
The festival, known as Sânziene or Drăgaică, is celebrated annually on June 24 and is a pagan celebration of the sun, nature, and love/fertility. Ancient mystical songs full of symbolism are interspersed with virtuoso dance melodies from the Romanian village tradition. These folkloric gems, in the Cununa Trio's own vocal/instrumental interpretation, are woven like a ‘Cununa’ (Romanian for wreath) with a fresh sound that captivates and connects.
